How To Fix a Key Stuck in a Lock

Dealing with a key that is stuck in a lock can be frustrating and stressful. Whether you're in a hurry or simply trying to get into your home or office, a stuck key can quickly turn into a major inconvenience.

Here at Smart Locksmith, we offer a comprehensive range of locksmith services, including lock repair, key replacement, lock installation, key extraction, and many more. If your key is stuck in a lock and you need help with extracting the key and fixing the lock, you've come to the right place. In this article, we will outline ways to remove a key stuck in lock.

Apply Spray Lubricant

A lack of lubrication can contribute to a key getting stuck in a lock. That's why your first step towards removing a key stuck in lock is to lubricate the lock. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the lock to help loosen the key. Use the nozzle attachment to spray directly into the top of the keyhole. Allow the lubricant to sit in the lock for a few minutes to penetrate the keyway and help loosen any debris or dust. Next, try gently jiggling the key up and down while attempting to turn it. This may help to dislodge any debris and allow the key to turn. Repeat the process if necessary.

NOTE: Do not use oil-based lubricants, as they may make the problem worse.

Use Graphite Powder

Sprinkle a small amount of graphite powder onto the keyhole. Make sure the powder gets inside the lock, and wiggle the key back and forth to help distribute the graphite powder. Then, try turning the key to see if it will come out. If the key doesn't come out, try repeating the process a few more times. It may take a few applications of graphite powder to loosen the key.

Use A Pair Of Needle-Nose Pliers

If the key is sticking out of the lock, you may be able to gently pull it out using a pair of pliers. Be careful not to apply too much force or you may break the key.

Push Plug Method

The push plug method is another effective technique that you can try to remove a stuck key from a lock. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Step 1: Insert a plug spinner into the lock and rotate it in the direction that the key would normally turn.
  2. Step 2: While the plug spinner is still engaged in the lock, gently push the key into the lock as far as it will go.
  3. Step 3: Turn the plug spinner in the opposite direction of the key's normal rotation while continuing to apply pressure to the key. This should release the pins inside the lock and allow the key to be removed.
  4. Step 4: Once the pins are released, the key should be able to be removed from the lock.
