What Is A Key Fob And How To Program It?

A key fob is a small handheld electronic device that allows you to control your car's keyless entry system. This remote control device does more than just locking and unlocking your car. It can also be used to start a car remotely, roll down windows, and fold in mirrors at the touch of a button. A key fob offers complete convenience and enhances your car's security. Apart from cars, key fobs are also used to secure office buildings, recreational areas, apartments, parking garages, and gym facilities.

How Does A Key Fob Work?

A key fob works through radio frequency identification (RFID), which operates like an electronic barcode. When you press the button on the key fob, a short-range radio transmitter in the fob sends a signal to a receiver unit in the car. The signal matches what the receiver unit in your car has been programmed to accept. If the distinct coded signal doesn't match with the information the receiver device is programmed to accept, the desired action will not be performed.

If your key fob has stopped working and you're not familiar with the key fob programming process, you may be wondering what steps you should follow. Here are the steps to follow to program your key fob:

STEP 1

Get in your driver's seat and lock all the doors. Do not forget to lock the doors, as leaving them open can interfere with the process.

STEP 2

If you're using the key system, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "˜ON' position to power your vehicle's electrical system. Do not start the engine. Ensure that the ignition is not in radio mode, as it can disrupt the process.

STEP 3

With the ignition key in the "˜ON' position, press the remote lock button and then turn the key to the "˜OFF' position.

STEP 4

Repeat this process at least three times, and end the cycle with the key in the "˜ON' position. This process sends a signal to your car's control box that the key is in the ignition, and the unit will save the information.

STEP 5

After turning the key to the "˜OFF' position, you'll hear a locking sound that unlocks all your car doors, indicating that your car has entered the programming mode and the process is successful. If you don't hear the locking sound, you'll have to repeat STEP 3.

STEP 6

When you hear a locking sound, press the remote lock button within five seconds to complete the process.

If you're unable to complete the process successfully, it's advisable to contact a nearby auto locksmith to help you program your key fob.
