What Should You Do If You Are Locked Out?

Getting locked out of your house can be stressful and frustrating, especially if it happens late at night or when it's raining. It disrupts your entire schedule and can expose you to dangerous situations in some cases. Knowing what to do when you're locked out can be a real lifesaver.

Here are some tips on what to do when you are locked out of your house.

Call Someone Who May Have a Spare Key

If you live with a roommate, your partner, or a family member, they may have a spare key. Call them and see if they'll come home and help you get back into your house. It may be inconvenient for them, especially if it's late at night, but this option will save you a lot of hassle. If you've rented the house, the landlord or rental office will probably have an extra set of keys. Call them and ask for a spare key.

Look For Unlocked Doors or Windows

There's a chance you may have forgotten to lock one of the doors or windows in your house if you left in a hurry. It doesn't hurt to check all your home's entry points, including garage doors, patio doors, side doors, ground-floor windows, and first-floor windows. If you're lucky to find an open window, remove the screen and enter with extreme caution.

NOTE: You should never leave any of your doors or windows open when you're not home.

Take off the Door Knob If It's Not Tamper-Proof

If you have access to a screwdriver, you can remove the door knob without damaging it. Start by removing the screws on the interior side of the door knob, then pull it apart. Next, take out the latch and unscrew the strike plate from the door jamb. You should only opt for this option if you know what you are doing; otherwise, you'll end up damaging the door knob.

Call a Nearby Locksmith to Help You Out

If you've exhausted all the options listed above and have had no luck, call a nearby locksmith to come and help you out. A professional locksmith will come in with advanced tools and help you get back inside in no time.

What Not To Do When You're Locked Out Of Your House

  • Do not panic. Try to remain calm as you find a way to get back inside
  • Do not break your door or smash a window"”you could injure yourself and fixing a broken door can be more expensive than calling a locksmith.
